HIGHWAY DEATHS DOWN!

According to the Transportation Department, deaths on U.S. highways have fallen to their lowest levels since the 1950s. The department’s projections show that total traffic deaths decreased almost nine percent in 2009 to 333,963, the lowest number of such deaths since 1954. In addition, highway safety officials are reporting a record low fatality rate, with the number of deaths falling to 1.15 per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2009. In fact, highway deaths have been declining steadily since 2005. While some attribute these new numbers to a weak economy that has people driving less, many safety experts are saying that increased seat-belt use, stricter enforcement of traffic laws, and more focused targeting of drunk drivers also play a role.
