SEAT BELT BY LAW

By now, everyone should know that seat belts provide the most effective means of protecting drivers and passengers from injury in vehicle crashes. Those wearing seat belts are half as likely to be seriously injured and 45% less likely to die than those not wearing seat belts. It comes as little surprise, then, that states have enacted legislation designed to increase seat belt use. The more stringent the law, the more effective it is. In states where tickets can only be handed out for not wearing a seat belt if vehicles have been pulled over for another offense, seat belt compliance is 79% versus 88% in states where police can issue tickets simply for not wearing a seat belt.
